"RFID will make life for consumers better, safer and more convenient. It will also be easier for them to get additional information about products – such as potential allergic reactions to medications – or to comparison shop. Consumers need only have a basic understanding of the technology to maintain their privacy and protect themselves from misuse. That’s why it’s more important to educate people about the different applications of RFID than the details of the technology."

What benefits do you think RFID technology could bring to consumers?
RFID will make life for consumers easier, safer and more convenient. It will also be easier for consumers to get additional information on products (e.g. information on allergic reactions or links to comparison sites).
How can awareness about the technology be raised?
It is important to educate people on the applications of RFID technology, not purely on the technology itself. When it comes to privacy and RFID, consumers only need a basic understanding of RFID. With this basic understanding, they can protect themselves from misuse of the technology. The actual use of personal data is part of a broader picture (i.e. the application). People must understand privacy implications in the light of this broader picture and not focus merely on the technology.
Are you doing something towards that end?
We already have a consumer website online: www.watisrfid.nl.
The RFID Platform Nederland is a non-profit organisation comprised of more than 50 companies working in RFID. It promotes the uptake of RFID in the Netherlands and ensures that the technology is used in a responsible manner.
