RFID Helps Keep Sewage Canals Clean and Safe

Easy ID of Canals Eases Job of Workers

Cleaning and maintaining a city’s sewage pipes can be a dirty business, and it starts with correctly identifying the canals that need attention. However, when workers see hundreds of canals a day, it’s easy for them to get mixed up.

That’s why a city in Germany has tagged the canals right under their manhole covers with RFID. Workers use handheld readers to read a tag from a distance and confirm that they are inspecting, repairing and cleaning the proper canals.

The system saves time for workers and reduces paperwork and the errors that can come with it. It also saves the city money, thereby saving taxpayers money as well.
