An idea to use RFID with streaming Internet radio

A Scandinavian art student has had a clever idea for a way to use RFID to make streaming Internet radio services even more interesting and personal: he imagines computer speakers equipped with an RFID reader, and paper boxes shaped like radios and equipped with RFID chips.

When the chip glued to the “radio” is brought close to the speaker, it would automatically tune the computer to the URL of a specific Internet radio station and play that music.

The “radios” could easily be made in many different colors and shapes; and the stations they were programmed to transmit could be special playlists created by celebrities, by brands, or by musicians.

Because these paper radios would be quite inexpensive to produce, they could even be giveaways or promotional items.

We think it’s an interesting idea, and we’ll be thinking some more about it … after the next song.
