One cappuccino, no wallet, with RFID

With RFID, your cup pays for your coffee

A clever engineer and entrepreneur in the United States has created a coffee mug that not only holds your coffee, but also pays for it!

The mug has an RFID chip sealed into a waterproof section on the bottom. To pay, a customer just waves their mug in front of a special RFID reader at the register. The RFID chip inside acts as a pre-payment card: consumers load up their mug with money from time to time, and debit away from the sum each time they buy a cup.

Coffee shops equipped with this sort of RFID system could sell the mug to their regular customers. In addition to making it easier and faster for both cashier and customer, the mugs would serve as a great loyalty programme.

One cappuccino for us, please –  and we’ll take a no-wallet muffin with that, too!
