Korean Meteorological Service Reports Weather with RFID

Koreans have access to weather data from remote areas with the help of RFID

The Korean meteorological service is using RFID to collect weather data in remote areas to better predict thunderstorms, hurricanes and other dangerous weather developments.

It has set up a wireless sensor network based on RFID on the island of Jeju. Sensor nodes are installed on towers or poles. Once they have collected data and video about air temperature, wind directions and snowfall, the information and a unique identification number for the node is sent via RFID to the database and used in weather analysis models.

RFID allows the system to function in remote and rugged terrain, since no wired connections are needed for data transmission. In other words, RFID is making data available that otherwise would not be.

And this data is just what is needed to make early warnings and better weather predictions to save lives and help people reduce loss of property.
